OrthoWorx has been working to help students get more educated in valuable subjects that may one day lead to a career in a field such as orthopedics. Driven in part by findings of our Cambridge Study, Warsaw Community Schools obtained a major state grant to convert a traditional elementary in Warsaw into a STEM school. The Washington STEM Academy opened in August 2012.
Additionally, OrthoWorx funded a program for STEM strategic roadmapping, increased teacher professional development and the launch of a mobile STEM learning laboratory that brings project-based learning to student in all elementaries in the Warsaw Schools district.
OrthoWorx has provided the majority of the funding required for Kosciusko County’s participation in a regional matching program that enables all schools in the county to access Project Lead The Way’s STEM curriculum.
Investing In STEM Gets Results
The results have been striking: in the first year after converting Washington Elementary School to Washington STEM Academy, fourth grade I-STEP science scores went from 65% passing to 87%. In 2023, that number rose to 92%.
Additionally, the school scored 93% mastery in non-fiction text, 93% in writing applications and 92% in problem solving. These three areas traditionally had seen low scores (as is the case in many schools).
