The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) is a statewide industry-led research institute unlike any in the nation, owing its strength and foundation to a unique and significant life sciences ecosystem that is found only in Indiana.

Launched in 2013 by a diverse and broad group of Indiana-based life sciences companies in collaboration with the State of Indiana and Indiana’s leading research universities, the IBRI is gaining momentum and recognition for its research and business model that breaks through today’s research challenges and is positioned to tackle one of the most pressing human health issues: cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.

The Institute brings together Indiana’s deep and broad life sciences industry, which includes

  • Global and local enterprises developing next-generation drugs and pharmaceuticals
  • Novel and companion diagnostics tests
  • Medical devices and equipment, and agricultural biotechnology
  • Research universities to address common scientific questions

Indiana’s life sciences industries and universities all have an interest in understanding the biological and metabolic pathways of the interrelated metabolic disease of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and nutrition, and in attracting the best talent to help solve those human health issues.

The Institute aims to facilitate the collaboration needed to succeed in today’s research environment and introduces a new approach to funding scientific research. The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute model shifts from the traditional funding focus with a predominant reliance on federal funding to a more dynamic and equally diverse mix of revenue sources, including industry-sponsored research dollars, federal funds, philanthropic funds and venture capital.

The Institute raised $50 million in start-up funding in six months, which includes State, industry and philanthropic dollars, and is on track to appoint a CEO who will lead the next phase of the Institute’s development. For more information about the IBRI, visit www.indianabiosciences.org.
